The short answer

  • Most legal answering services bill by the minute or by the call, sold as monthly packages. AI intake platforms such as Clerx use call packages shaped around your volume, channels and workflow.
  • Published starting prices reviewed Nov 2026 range from $49/month pay-as-you-go (PATLive) to $350/month for 200 minutes (AnswerConnect), with larger human-receptionist packages running into the thousands per month.
  • The meter matters more than the headline price. Average call length, transfers, add-ons and setup fees decide what you actually pay.
  • Choose a human answering service when your firm specifically requires provider-supplied live receptionists. Choose Clerx when you want calls and messages turned into qualified intake, booked consultations and records in your legal software.

What a legal answering service fee usually covers

Law firms are not buying a voicemail box. They are paying for every new inquiry to be answered, the right questions to be asked, urgent matters to reach the right person, and the details to land where the team works.

That is why two services with similar headline prices can deliver very different value. Compare what reaches your team after the call, not just the rate per minute.

The three pricing models

Per-minute live answering

Many human answering services sell bundles of receptionist minutes, with a rate for minutes beyond the bundle. Published plans reviewed Nov 2026:

  • Ruby: $250/month for 50 receptionist minutes, $395 for 100, $720 for 200 and $1,725 for 500. Website chat is priced separately, from $143/month for 10 chats (Ruby plans and pricing).
  • AnswerConnect: $350/month for 200 minutes plus a $49.99 setup fee, with $2.50 per additional minute. Larger plans lower the overage rate (AnswerConnect plans).
  • PATLive: $49/month pay-as-you-go at $2.99 per minute, up to $349/month for 200 minutes and larger bundles beyond that (PATLive pricing).
  • Abby Connect: from $164/month for 50 Abby minutes, up to $1,380/month for 500 minutes. Abby says choosing AI doubles your minutes (Abby pricing).
  • LEX Reception: legal-focused plans billed per minute, each with a monthly price, any setup fee and an additional-minute rate shown on its plans page. Optional add-ons such as call transcription are listed separately.

Per-minute billing rewards short calls. Longer intake conversations, holds and transfers all draw down the bundle.

Per-call pricing

Smith.ai prices by the call. Its human receptionist plans start at $300/month for 30 calls, then $810 for 90 calls and $2,100 for 300 calls, with per-call overages and add-ons such as appointment booking (Smith.ai receptionist pricing). Its AI receptionist has a free tier of 25 calls and paid plans from $150/month (Smith.ai AI receptionist pricing).

Per-call pricing makes long calls predictable, but add-ons can move the total. Read our Clerx vs Smith.ai comparison for how the two approaches differ.

Quote-based legal plans

Some legal-only providers share prices after a form or a call. Answering Legal, for example, bills by the minute and offers a free trial, but it does not publish dollar figures. See Clerx vs Answering Legal for the full comparison.

How Clerx pricing works

Clerx offers call packages based on expected call volume, selected channels and workflow requirements, with additional-call charges or package upgrades where applicable. Terms are monthly or annual and auto-renew unless you give 30 days' notice.

What the package pays for is a full intake workflow, not a pool of receptionist time:

  • Practice-specific qualification built around your intake questions and practice-area rules.
  • Consultation booking and payment through Clerx Scheduling & Payments, connected to LawPay or Clio Payments, so prospects can book and pay without staff follow-up (paid consultations guide).
  • Legal software updates, so intake details reach tools such as Clio and MyCase without re-typing. See all integrations.
  • 50+ supported languages, set up for the languages your firm actually serves.
  • Calls, chat and text in one intake flow, across phone, website chat and SMS, depending on the channels in your package.

Clerx does not supply human receptionists. Calls that need personal attention go to your designated team, based on your firm's escalation rules.

Onboarding is part of the value

Clerx onboarding is white-glove and led by our CTO. We tailor the setup to your firm, design the intake flow and workflow with you, connect your calendars and software, and test everything together before launch. After launch, you share feedback and we implement it until you are fully happy.

Your firm approves the intake instructions and decides which matters go to staff. Clerx does the configuration work. Our guide to testing an AI receptionist before go-live shows what that review covers.

How to compare quotes: a short checklist

  • Estimate monthly calls and average call length from your phone records.
  • Price each option at that volume, including overages, setup fees and add-ons.
  • List what must happen after the call: qualification, booking, payment, software updates.
  • Confirm the languages and channels you need.
  • Ask how each provider sets up and tests your intake workflow before launch.

When a human answering service fits

A human answering service is the right choice when your firm specifically requires provider-supplied live receptionists on every call. Ruby, AnswerConnect, PATLive, Abby Connect and LEX Reception all offer that model. Our comparisons with Ruby, AnswerConnect, PATLive, Abby Connect and LEX Reception cover each one in detail.

When Clerx is the better fit

  • You want every new inquiry asked your practice-specific questions, day or night.
  • You charge for consultations and want prospects to book and pay in one step.
  • Your team spends time re-typing intake details into Clio, MyCase or another legal platform.
  • You serve clients in more than one language.
  • Inquiries arrive by phone, website chat and text, and you want one intake flow for all of them.
  • You want a provider that designs, tests and refines the workflow with you, rather than a minute bundle you manage alone.

Phone-heavy, low-volume and high-emotion practices can all be excellent Clerx customers. See how firms switch from a virtual receptionist to AI intake, or compare AI-first options in Clerx vs Posh, Clerx vs Nexa and Clerx vs Intaker.
